Science-Based Health Benefits of Artichoke Extract

Science-Based Health Benefits of Artichoke Extract

Artichoke extract is produced from the globe artichoke plant (Cynara scolymus L.) and it is typically standardized to contain a certain percentage of caffeoyliquinic acid. However there are other bioactive compounds including luteolin, inulin and cynarin.

Traditionally, extracts of artichoke leaves have been used for liver protection and lowering cholesterol.

Artichoke extract is included in Liver Support by Beyond Vita®.

1. Digestion

Many people experience gastrointestinal problems such as irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), constipation, stomach pain, diarrhea and flatulence.

In a study of 208 adults suffering from irritable bowel syndrome, artichoke leaf extract caused remission in 26% of the participants and a 41% decrease in symptoms on average.1

In a survey of people with IBS who take artichoke extract, researchers reported 96% of respondents rated artichoke extract as better or equal to previous therapies they have tried.2

Inulin from artichoke extract can also increase the number of beneficial microorganisms in the gut.3

Artichoke extract can also stimulate bile production to help speed up gut movement.4

Two studies also show that artichoke leaf extract can help improve digestion, ease fullness and reduce symptoms in participants suffering from indigestion.5,6

Artichoke may help improve digestion and reduce the severity of irritable bowel syndrome symptoms.

2. Liver Health

Artichoke extract can stimulate bile production in the liver to help carry toxic compounds away which can help protect the liver.1

In a 2018 double-blind randomized controlled study on 100 patients with non-alcoholic fatty liver disease, researchers found artichoke leaf extract decreased liver enzymes (AST and ALT) levels, liver fat and liver damage.2

A study involving 30 participants found that artichoke reduced liver damage.3 Another study demonstrated that artichoke extract can protect against liver damage from a tylenol over dose.4

Artichoke may help reduce liver damage and improve liver health.

3. Helps Lower Cholesterol

In the same 2018 study referenced above, researchers also found that artichoke extract reduced total cholesterol, LDL cholesterol and triglycerides.2

Another 2004 study also demonstrated a reduction in total cholesterol and LDL cholesterol after artichoke extract supplementation.5

Researchers in a different study conclude that artichoke could be used to help treat arteriosclerosis.6

Artichoke may help lower total and LDL cholesterol levels.

Artichoke is an important plant that may help improve liver health, lower cholesterol and improve digestion.*
