Science-Based Health Benefits of Bilberry

Bilberry (Vaccinium myrtillus), also known as the European blueberry, is a berry producing shrub native to northern Europe and parts of North America.

They are a rich source of anthocyanins which are powerful antioxidants that can help protect body in addition to several health benefits.

Bilberry is included in Liver Support by Beyond Vita.

1. Liver Health

Bilberry may be able to help improve liver function and prevent liver damage.

In a 2011 study researchers found bilberry can decrease oxidative stress in the liver and help reduce liver fibrosis.1

Researchers in a 2015 study also found an anthocyanin rich bilberry extract was able to lessen the development of non-alcoholic fatty liver disease by reducing liver fat accumulation, inflammation and fibrosis.2

In a randomized double-blind placebo-controlled trial involving 74 participants with non-alcoholic fatty liver disease, researchers found that anthocyanin was able to improve the signs of liver injury. The researchers concluded that anthocyanin could have an application in helping patients with non-alcoholic fatty liver disease.3

Two other studies support the positive effects bilberry has on the liver.4,5

Bilberry may help protect the liver and promote liver health.

2. Eye Health

Bilberry has traditionally been used to protect against multiple conditions including eye fatigue, cataracts and glaucoma.

Anthocyanins from bilberry have been shown to improve vision in people with glaucoma in multiple studies by helping to reduce ocular pressure and increasing blood flow.6,7,8

Bilberry has also been shown to have protective effects against retinal damage.9,10

Additionally, researchers have found that bilberry can reduce damage to the eye caused by oxidative stress from exposure to UV light.11

Multiple other studies have also demonstrated the protective effects of bilberry on the eye.12,13,14,15

In a 2015 study involving 281 office workers, researchers found that bilberry supplementation improved the symptoms of eye fatigue caused by computer screens.16

Bilberry may help improve eye health by reducing oxidative stress.

3. Powerful Antioxidant

The anthocyanins from bilberry can act as an antioxidant to reduce the damage caused by free radicals to help fight inflammation.

Multiple studies have shown that bilberries can help reduce inflammation.17,18,19

A 2012 randomized and controlled study with 27 participants found that bilberry helped to reduce low grade inflammation.20

Researchers claim bilberry can reduce inflammation through modulating oxidative stress.21,22

Bilberry can act as an antioxidant and may help fight inflammation.

4. Heart Health

Bilberry may also be able to help lower cholesterol levels to improve heart health.

In a 2011 study involving 150 participants with high cholesterol researchers found that anthocyanin supplementation decreased the participant’s LDL cholesterol levels and increased endothelium-dependent vasodilation .23

Researchers in a double-blind placebo-controlled study found that anthocyanin supplementation helped to lower LDL cholesterol and increase HDL cholesterol levels.24 HDL cholesterol is often called the good cholesterol because of it’s beneficial effects on the body.

In another study involving 36 people researchers found bilberry lowered LDL cholesterol and raised HDL cholesterol. They concluded that bilberry can be an important part in reducing cardiovascular disease risk.25

Bilberry may help lower LDL cholesterol and raise HDL cholesterol.
