Science-Based Health Benefits of CoQ10

Science-Based Health Benefits of CoQ10

CoQ10, also known as coenzyme Q10, is an important compound that plays many vital roles in the body including energy generation. The body naturally produces CoQ10 however production decreases with age and many degenerative disorders have been associated with low CoQ10 levels.

CoQ10 is included in CoQ10 and PQQ Complex by Beyond Vita®.

1. Heart Health

Hypertrophic cardiomyopathy or a thickening of the muscles in the heart can make it harder for the heart to pump blood and increase the risk of heart failure.

A study on 87 people with hypertrophic cardiomyopathy found that CoQ10 supplementation was able to reduce the average interventricular septal thickness and posterior wall thickness by 22.4% and 23.1% respectively.1 Another study also showed a 24% and 26% reduction in heart wall thickness with CoQ10 supplementation.2

CoQ10 may also help alleviate cardiovascular disease by decreasing inflammation and preventing the oxidation of LDL cholesterol.3,4

Over a 2 year period CoQ10 supplementation reduced the risk of mortality from heart failure by 43%.4

Researchers have also found oral CoQ10 supplementation can improve left ventricle contractility and improve heart function in congestive heart failure patients.5 A 2016 review of several studies also found CoQ10 supplementation can decrease adverse events in heart failure patients.6

CoQ10 supplementation has also been shown to reduce recovery time and improve heart function after heart surgery.7,8

A meta-analysis of 5 studies with a total of 194 patients found that CoQ10 supplementation can significantly improve endothelial function and poor endothelial function has been implicated with developing atherosclerosis.9

Multiple studies have demonstrated CoQ10 can improve blood flow and increase blood vessel health by increasing nitric oxide levels through eliminating free radicals.10,11,12,13

CoQ10 has also been shown to reduce platelet size and prevent platelets from sticking together suggesting that supplementation may help prevent blood clots.14

CoQ10 may help improve heart health, heart failure outlook and prevent atherosclerosis.

2. Headaches

People who have regular and persistent headaches or migraines often have low levels of CoQ10.15

In an open label trial involving 32 patients, researchers reported that after 3 months of CoQ10 supplementation participants experienced a 55% reduction in the number of days with migraine headaches.16

A randomized double-blind and placebo controlled trial on 42 migraine patients found CoQ10 was effective in reducing migraine frequency.17

CoQ10 can also reduce the severity of migraines.18

CoQ10 may help reduce the frequency and severity of headaches.

3. Helps Reduce Fatigue

Diminished mitochondrial function can lead to fatigue and CoQ10 may help reduce it by improving mitochondrial energy production.19,20

In a randomized double-blind and placebo controlled study researchers concluded that oral CoQ10 supplementation reduced self reported fatigue and increased physical performance.21

Another study reported that CoQ10 can increase time to exhaustion.22

CoQ10 may help reduce fatigue and increase exercise capacity.

4. Helps Lower Blood Sugar

A 2014 randomized double-blind and placebo controlled study found that CoQ10 supplementation significantly lowered fasting blood sugar and HbA1C.23

A 2018 meta-analysis on 13 trials involving 765 patients with type 2 diabetes reported that CoQ10 may assist with blood sugar control.24

CoQ10 may also slow the progression from pre-diabetes to diabetes according to researchers.25

Researchers in another meta-analysis of 18 studies also found that CoQ10 supplementation can reduce blood glucose levels.26

CoQ10 may help lower blood sugar levels.

5. Helps Protect the Lungs

Low levels of CoQ10 are associated with asthma and chronic pulmonary disease.27,28,29

A study involving 41 bronchial asthma patients found that supplementing with antioxidants including CoQ10 helped patients reduce the dosage of their corticosteroids.30

CoQ10 may help protect the lungs.

6. Helps Lower Blood Pressure

A 12 week randomized double-blind and placebo-controlled trial reported that CoQ10 supplementation reduced systolic blood pressure by 17.8 mm Hg on average. Researchers concluded CoQ10 could be offered to hypertensive patients as an alternative treatment option.31

In another study, systolic blood pressure fell from 164.5 to 146.7 mmHg and diastolic blood pressure from 98.1 to 86.1 mmHg as a result of CoQ10 supplementation.32

After an average of 4.4 months of CoQ10 supplementation 51% of hypertensive patients were able to come completely off between 1 and 3 anti-hypertensive drugs.33

Researchers believe it can lower blood pressure through decreasing oxidative stress.34

CoQ10 may help lower blood pressure.

7. Helps Reduce Inflammation

High levels of an inflammation marker called C-reactive protein are linked to heart disease and CoQ10 has been shown to lower C-reative protein levels.35

A 2016 study concluded CoQ10 supplementation reduced oxidative stress and increased antioxidant capacity.36

CoQ10 may help reduce inflammation by increasing antioxidant capacity.

8. Liver Health

In a randomized double-blind placebo controlled trial of 44 participants with non-alcoholic fatty liver disease, 4 weeks of CoQ10 supplementation was able to significantly decrease liver enzyme levels.37

Another study reported CoQ10 could be effective in improving non-alcoholic fatty liver disease and decreasing systemic inflammation.38

Researchers also claim CoQ10 can control liver fat metabolism and inhibit the accumulation of fat in the liver which may prevent the progression of non-alcoholic fatty liver disease.39

CoQ10 may help improve liver health by reducing liver enzyme levels.

9. May Help Fibromyalgia

Researchers have found patients with fibromyalgia have dysfunction in CoQ10 levels and oral supplementation can improve symptoms of fatigue, depression, pain and headaches.40,41,42,43

CoQ10 may help improve fibromyalgia symptoms.

10. Skin Health

Researchers in a 2009 study say their results suggest CoQ10 has anti-aging action on the skin by protecting it from oxidative stress.44

A 2017 randomized double-blind placebo-controlled study found that oral CoQ10 supplementation helped prevent the deterioration of skin elasticity and helped decrease the signs of aging by improving skin smoothness and reducing wrinkles.45

CoQ10 may help improve the skin and reduce wrinkles.

11. Boosts Immune Function

According to a 2015 study, CoQ10 promotes immune system function.46

Models of the immune system have demonstrated that CoQ10 is essential for the optimal function of the immune system and could be used to modulate it.47

In addition, CoQ10 supplementation may be useful during times of immune system stress.48

Researchers suspect CoQ10 can boost the immune system since CoQ10 plays a key role in energy metabolism and immune cells are highly energy dependent.49

CoQ10 may help improve immune system function.
