Science-Based Health Benefits of Fenugreek

Science-Based Health Benefits of Fenugreek

Fenugreek (Trigonella foenum-graecum) is plant in the legume family from Eurasia. It has traditionally been used to reduce blood sugar levels, increase breast milk production in nursing mothers and to promote digestion.

As a supplement it is typically sold as fenugreek extract and standardized to contain a certain percentage saponins which are the main biologically active compounds.

Fenugreek extract is included in Blood Sugar Support by Beyond Vita®.

1. Helps Lower Blood Sugar

Fenugreek can help lower blood sugar by increasing insulin sensitivity which allows the blood sugar lowering effect of insulin to work better and by increasing the amount of insulin secreted.1,2

In a 2009 study involving 24 type 2 diabetics, researchers found fenugreek supplementation resulted in a 25% decrease in fasting blood sugar.3

Researchers in a 3 year randomized and placebo controlled study on 140 women with prediabetes found that participants who did not take fenugreek had a 4.2 times higher chance of developing diabetes compared to the participants that took fenugreek.4

In another study in 2017, researchers found fenugreek can help reduce fasting blood sugar as well as HbA1c.5

Multiple other studies also support the use of fenugreek to lower blood sugar.6,7,8

Fenugreek may be able to help lower fasting blood sugar.

2. Helps Lower Cholesterol

Fenugreek may help lower cholesterol and in the same 2009 study cited above, fenugreek was also able to decrease LDL cholesterol by 30.6% and triglycerides by 30%.3

Another study also found that fenugreek was able to significantly lower total cholesterol and LDL cholesterol.7

A 2016 meta-analysis of 12 studies found that fenugreek significantly lowered total cholesterol.8

Other studies also conclude that fenugreek is potentially beneficial in the treatment of hypercholesterolemia (high cholesterol).9,10,11,12

Fenugreek may be able to help lower total cholesterol and LDL cholesterol.

3. Female Breast Milk Production

Many new mothers aren’t able to produce enough breast milk and fenugreek may be able to help.

In a review and network-meta analysis of five studies involving fenugreek, researchers found that fenugreek significantly increased the production of breast milk in comparison to a placebo.13

Additionally, in a 2011 study of 66 mother-infant pairs where mothers drank a fenugreek tea, researchers found fenugreek enhanced the production of breast milk. In addition, infant weight was also increased when compared to the placebo and control groups.14

Another meta-analysis also found fenugreek to be effective at increasing breast milk supply.15

Fenugreek may help increase breast milk supply in new mothers.

Fenugreek is an important plant that may help lower blood sugar, increase heart health and promote breast milk production in women.*
