Science-Based Health Benefits of Grape Seed Extract

Grape seed extract comes from the seeds of the grape vine. They are a rich source of antioxidants called proanthyanidins. As a supplement it’s commonly available as grape seed extract and standardized to contain 95% proanthocyanidins.

Grape seed extract is included in CoQ10 and PQQ Complex and Hair, Skin and Nails Support by Beyond Vita.

1. Cardiovascular Health

Researchers in a 2004 study found grape seed extract supplementation improved endothelial nitric oxide production. A functioning endothelium is essential for blood vessel health.1

Grade seed extract has also been shown to reduce oxidative stress and improve inflammation markers in patients with a high risk of a cardiovascular event. Lowering inflammation and oxidative stress can help lower cardiovascular risk.2

When LDL cholesterol oxidizes, it can be deposited on blood vessel walls as plaque causing atherosclerosis. Multiple studies have shown that grape seed extract supplementation can lower levels of oxidized LDL cholesterol and decease the risk of atherosclerosis and cardiovascular disorders.3,4,5

Other studies also support the protective effects of grape seed extract on the heart and blood vessels.6,7,8

Grape seed extract may help protect the heart and blood vessels from oxidative damage and improve endothelial function.

2. Increased Blood Flow

In an 8 week 2007 study researchers found that taking grape seed extract had blood thinning effects and could potentially reduce the risk of blood clots.9

Grape seed extract has also been shown to reduce leg swelling and edema by 70% after 6 hours of sitting in a study of 8 women.10

Grape seed extract may help increase blood blow and reduce the risk of blood clots.

3. Helps Reduce Blood Pressure

In a 2016 double-blind placebo-controlled trial, researchers reported that grape seed extract improved blood pressure in people with pre-hypertension.11

Researchers also reported in a meta-analysis of 16 randomized controlled trials that grape seed extract has a beneficial impact on blood pressure.12

Grape seed extract may help lower blood pressure.

4. Skin Health

A 2008 study concluded that dietary grape seed extract could help reduce the adverse effects of UV damage on the skin.13

Cholasma is a condition where brown patches appear on the face. In a study of 12 Japanese women with cholasma researchers reported that oral grape seed extract supplementation was effective at reducing hyperpigmentation in women with cholasma.14

Multiple other studies support the protective effects of grape seed extract on the skin.15,16,17

Grape seed extract may help protect the skin from UV damage.
