Science-Based Health Benefits of Korean Ginseng (Panax ginseng)

Science-Based Health Benefits of Korean Ginseng (Panax ginseng)

Korean ginseng (Panax ginseng), also known as Chinese ginseng or Asian ginseng, is a plant native to Eastern Asia. The other main type of ginseng is American Ginseng (Panax quinquefolius).

The main bioactive compounds in Korean ginseng are called ginsenosides.

Korean ginseng is included in Adrenal Support by Beyond Vita®.

1. Fights Fatigue

In a 2013 double-blind placebo-controlled trial on 90 participants with chronic fatigue, Korean ginseng was able to significantly reduce fatigue. The study’s researchers believe it is due to the antioxidant effects of Korean ginseng.1

A meta-analysis of four studies found that Korean ginseng had a significant effect on reducing fatigue.2

Multiple other studies also support Korean ginseng supplementation reducing fatigue.3,4,5

Korean ginseng may help reduce fatigue and increase energy.

2. Helps Improve Brain Function

In a 24 week study, researchers found that Korean ginseng improved the mental condition of participants with Alzheimer’s disease. The improvements were sustained for two years after the trial ended.6

Two more studies also support improved cognitive function in patients with Alzheimer’s disease after supplementing with Korean ginseng.7,8

Korean ginseng may help reduce cognitive decline and improve brain function.

3. Helps Erectile Function

Researchers in a 2007 study on 60 men with erectile dysfunction found Korean ginseng significantly improved erection strength and the researchers concluded it could be an effective treatment for erectile dysfunction.9

A meta-analysis of several studies found that there is evidence for the effectiveness of Korean ginseng for the treatment of erectile dysfunction.10

Korean ginseng may help improve erectile strength.

4. Adrenal Health

Korean ginseng may also improve adrenal health.

Bioactive compounds from Korean ginseng help inhibit enzymes that block the binding of stress hormones to their receptors. This action can help increase the effectiveness of the adrenal glands by preventing the overproduction of cortisol.11 In addition researchers claim this can help to redistribute the body’s energy reserves.12

Researchers have found that Korean ginseng can help improve stress response by regulating the function of the hypothalamic–pituitary–adrenal axis.13

A 2018 double-blind placebo-controlled trial found that Korean ginseng can reduce the hypothalamic–pituitary–adrenal axis response to stress.14 Researchers in another study claim Korean ginseng can do this by increasing sensitivity in the hypothalamic–pituitary–adrenal axis.15

Korean ginseng may help improve adrenal health by improving the hypothalamic–pituitary–adrenal axis.

5. Antioxidant and Anti-Inflammatory

Antioxidants are compounds that fight inflammation by neutralizing free radicals and reactive oxygen species.

In the same 2013 trial cited above, Korean ginseng was able to increase participant’s blood glutathione concentration. Glutathione is a powerful antioxidant.1

A 2012 randomized double-blind placebo-controlled trial reported that participants who took Korean ginseng had increased superoxide dismutase activity and higher levels of glutathione. Superoxide dismutase is an an antioxidant that targets the reactive oxygen species called superoxide.16

Other studies also support the antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effects of Korean ginseng supplementation.17,18,19

Korean ginseng may help reduce inflammation through antioxidant activity.

Korean ginseng is an important herb that may help fight fatigue, improve adrenal health and brain function in addition to other benefits.*
