Science-Based Health Benefits of Monolaurin

Science-Based Health Benefits of Monolaurin

Monolaurin also known as glyceryl monolaurate is a substance that is made from lauric acid which is a naturally occurring fat found in both coconut oil and breast milk. Lauric acid is normally converted into monolaurin in the body. The conversion rate is unknown and it may be low.

As a result, it is better to take monolaurin as a supplement since it is more effective than lauric acid.

Monolaurin is included in Immune Support by Beyond Vita®.

1. Boosts Immunity

Monolaurin has shown antiviral activity against viruses enveloped with a lipid membrane and as a result it may be an effective antiviral agent.1,2 Researchers suspect some lipids like monolaurin can envelope some viruses, then deactivate them or make them more susceptible to a person’s own immune system.3,4

Researchers also believe that bacteria can absorb monolaurin and incorporate the substance into it’s membrane. This could interfere with replication and allow a person’s immune system to easily destroy the bacteria.5

Monolaurin may also be able to block the production of some toxins that bacteria produce.6

Studies show monolaurin seems to be more effective against gram-positive bacteria than gram negative bacteria and most bacteria does not seem to be resistant to it.7,8,9

Additionally, a study from 2016 on Candida albicans biofilms found monolaurin may also have antifungal properties.10

Monolaurin may be able to improve immune function by interfering with the activity of certain viruses and bacteria.

Monolaurin is an important compound that may help improve immune health.*
