Science-Based Health Benefits of Olive Leaf

Science-Based Health Benefits of Olive Leaf

Olive leaf is the leaf from the olive tree (Olea europaea) that is native to the area around the Mediterranean.

It contains many active compounds including hydroxytyrosol and oleuropein.

Olive leaf extract is included in Immune Support by Beyond Vita®.

1. Boosts Immunity

Oleuropein from olive leaf extract has antimicrobial and antiviral properties.1

In a 2010 study published in the Journal of Pharmacy and Pharmacology, researchers found that hydroxytyrosol and oleuropein both have broad antimicrobial activity against several different strains of bacteria. They claim olive leaf is a potential source of promising antimicrobial agents for the treatment of respiratory tract infections.2

In a 2019 clinical trial on olive leaf extract and upper respiratory illness, researchers found that olive leaf decreased the average duration of illness and decreased sick days in the participants.3

Another study found that olive leaf extract is able to modulate human immune response and increase numbers of immune cells such as natural killer and T helper cells.4

Olive leaf can help benefit immunity through modulating the immune system in addition to exerting antimicrobial and antiviral activity.

2. Bone Health

In two studies, oleuropein from olive was able to reduce bone loss in response to inflammation.5,6

Researchers found in a 12 month clinical trial on women with bone loss that olive leaf was able to maintain bone density and increase bone forming cell markers.7

Another study found oleuropein from olive was able to help increase bone cell production.8

Olive leaf may help protect bones from bone loss.

3. Helps Reduce Inflammation

Free radicals and reactive oxygen species are damaging molecules that can cause inflammation and oxidative stress. Antioxiants are powerful compounds that fight these harmful molecules.

The three main antioxidants in olive leaf are oleuropein, hydroxytyrosol, and tyrosol.9

Hydroxytyrosol has been shown to reduce oxidative stress in clinical trials.10,11 Studies show oleuropein does the same.12

A 2017 study found that oleuropein can reduce the production of pro-inflammatory molecules which resulted in the participants experiencing decreased inflammatory damage.13

In people with a joint disease called gonarthrosis, hydroxytyrosol was able to reduce inflammatory pain.14

Olive leaf can act as a powerful antioxidant to help fight free radicals and reduce inflammation.

4. Heart Health

Blood pressure and cholesterol levels are both keys to a healthy heart and lowering the risk of heart disease.

Olive leaf extract was able to significantly lower diastolic and systolic blood pressure in a clinical trial of 60 men at risk of developing high blood pressure. In addition, the participants cholesterol level fell by 6.5%.15

Researchers also found olive leaf extract to be just as effective as the diuretic called Captopril at lowering systolic and diastolic blood pressure in patients with stage-1 hypertension.16

Olive leaf can help heart health by lowering blood pressure and cholesterol.

Olive leaf is an important herb that may help improve immune, bone and heart health in addition to it’s function as an antioxidant.*
